Today, network marketing or in other words, "direct selling" has started to gain attention in Indian markets. Under the current scenario, 3% of Indian population is connected with network marketing companies and it will grow to another 80% by the year 2010.
Almost 62 million people all over the world are engaged in direct selling.
The direct selling industry does an estimated sales of over US$88 million worldwide
USA has highest number of direct selling people at 13.3 mn in 2003.
India with about 1.24mn direct selling ranks 2nd globally in terms of number of people employed in the direct selling industry.
Sales in India through direct selling is estimated at 2, 311 crore in 2003.
FMCG and nutritional products have emerged as the fastest growing category in India; accounting for almost 40% of product sales through direct selling.
Marketing of Services is likely to emerge as the next growing area.
But at the same time many fly by night operators have flooded the market with companies offering fraudulent schemes; one should beware of getting trapped into them. They pose themselves as direct selling companies offering independent business opportunities to gullible persons.
Broadly speaking, there are two main companies, where which offer good carrier opportunities. Amway and Fashion Suitings. Both of these companies have good business plan and regular training and support system. Amway started its operations in India in May 1998. Fashion Suitings is a Textile & FMCG giant also entered the direct selling market in India as RIGHT CONCEPT MARKETING (RCM) in August 2000.
